Welcome to the Winter 2021-22 issue of Unearthed 

This year’s winter issue has a strong focus on the writing and art of ESF students. It also features wonderful work from artists outside the ESF sphere. There is poetry, nonfiction, photography, and art. All of it speaks to what it means to unearth our senses, our surroundings, our thoughts and ideas and ways of being. We get to see vast and engulfing landscapes, read about cross-country jaunts that challenge our sense of home, indulge in critical conversations about generational responsibilities, and unearth, alongside these writers, new space for conversation and experience. 

A challenging fact for us at Unearthed remains: we still often have to turn down good work. Issues form their own organic shape, and we compile them by following that shape into scope. That said, we always encourage writers and artists to submit again in the future, and we look forward to another issue in the spring. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] 

We hope that you enjoy this issue. Whether it’s the poised and patient artwork of Naomi Cator, the concise and reflective essays from Asia Frantz, Anthonyne Metelus, and Maggie O’Brien, or the immersive and freeing poems of Jeremy Allan Hawkins, H.E. Fisher, and Kristin Camitta Zimet, or the majestic scale and focus of Adam DeSorbo’s photographs, there is something for everyone here as winter begins.
