Unearthed is an online literary magazine published by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and run by undergraduate student editors working in collaboration with the Writing Program and the Office of SUNY-ESF Communications staff. The journal focuses on works that define the environment as what Glen Mazis calls “surround”–the natural and social world that species share. We honor the legacy of SUNY-ESF’s original print creative journal, Ecologue and seek to publish work in the genres of non-fiction, fiction, poetry and artwork. We especially encourage works in new media and those that blend genres such as photo and video essays. To have your work considered for publication, please follow the guidelines found on the submit page.

Student Editors
Shourjya Majumder is a junior pursuing a degree in Conservation biology at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Over the summer of 2016, he ventured into the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park to study the biology of Grizzly bears, wolves and bison. He hopes to use his degree and arsenal of knowledge to decelerate the loss of biodiversity our planet is facing. He is passionate about all sorts of wildlife and will not let that fire burn out in front of him. In his spare time, he likes to listen to music, specifically Indian Folk, catch up on current scientific events, and read science fiction novels.
Zack will be a senior in the Conservation Biology Program and is Vice President of the Conservation Biology Club here at ESF. Though his independent studies are focused in predator revitalization; the dynamic multi-dimensionality of life, in all its forms, forces, & functions, has inspired the desire to resonate these dynamic qualities in service to our surround environment. For intellectual stimulation, Zack enjoys the exercises of relating, writing, and reflection. To keep physical, he indulges a Love for the outdoors, Kilo-his canine companion, and on occasion the Archbold Gymnasium.
Zack Smith is a Junior at SUNY-ESF majoring in environmental studies with a focus in communication and a minor in writing and rhetoric. Most of his free time is either spent playing and writing music or exploring the high peaks region of the Adirondack State Park where he grew up. He may also be found on an open highway or in an airplane window seat, traveling to reconnect with an old friend or experience something entirely new.
Rand is a third-year student at ESF studying Environmental Education and Interpretation with a minor in writing. He grew up in Northern Michigan, and has interests in journalism, sustainable agriculture, as well as any and all things plants.
Allison Brady is a Junior at SUNY-ESF with a major in conservation biology. She hopes to pursue a career in entomology and will be interning with the NYDEC this summer to help manage southern pine beetle populations on Long Island. Her true passions are poetry and philosophy.
Vanessa Lamot is a junior majoring in Wildlife Science. She is from Connecticut and can’t wait to graduate and move towards her goal of being a curator of mammals for a conservation based zoo. Vanessa loves spending her free time binge watching shows on Netflix and playing with cute animals.
Paige Dennis is a senior in the Environmental Education and Interpretation major at SUNY-ESF. She has an interest in natural history and hopes to pursue a career in museum education. In her free time she enjoys drawing and painting.
Executive Editor
Besides serving as Executive Editor, Kurt serves as Interim-Writing Program Director at SUNY-ESF. He teaches courses in Digital Editing and Publishing and Research Writing. To feed the muse, he runs trails, cooks spicy food, and meditates.
