Unearthed welcomes submissions in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. We accept submissions from September 1 to June 1 of each year.

We are interested in work that is experientially based and that broadly considers interconnections between species. We define environment as what Glen Mazis calls “surround”–the interrelated natural and social world that species share. As such we welcome work that focuses on ecology, science, health, place, and ways people interact with the environment. We especially encourage submission of works that are new media and those that blend genres such as photo and video essays. We allow simultaneous submissions but ask to be notified if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Guidelines: We ask that submissions be previously unpublished and we ask for first North American serial rights. Copyright reverts to the author upon publication. We also ask that when the work is published that again a credit line indicate that the work first appeared in Unearthed.

Until we have responded, please do not send more than a single submission in any one category (though you may submit to more than one category):

  • Up to five poems (please combine in one document)
  • One short story (up to 2,000 words)
  • One essay (up to 2,000 words)
  • Three short-shorts (up to 1,000 words each, please specify genre: fiction or nonfiction)
  • One photo essay (group of photos with words to accompany each photo; up to 1,000 words)
  • One video-essay, short documentary or digital video project

Short Bio:  Along with your submission, please include in your cover note a short biographical statement (250 words or less, written in the third person) that we can use if we publish your work. In your biographical statement, please share the school you attend, your major and minors, and your future goals as exemplified in this example:  “Terrance is a junior with a major in environmental biology and with minors in environmental writing and rhetoric, and native peoples issues and the environment. In the future he hopes to work in education outreach, teaching people about plants and the environment.”

Response Time: The response time varies between a week and four months based upon when our student editorial group convenes–relative to our fall and spring edition publishing deadlines.
