A Triptych Filmpoem from Failed State

Good Natured. Series: No Words

ARTIST STATEMENT

My poetic films are a social commentary with visual moving images, combining contemporary poems and creative writing as a tool/modality for meaning-making, especially related to critical analysis of social, political and cultural issues. My work began in the traditional documentary form and over the years moved into an experimental film form and workflow influenced by Jungian psychology. Jungian theories are concentrated in depth psychology, inner work, the conscious and unconscious mind, archetypes, dreams, synchronicity and symbolism.

My work entails a spiritual connection to the collective conscious and unconscious world with influences from nature and the environment. By visualizing poems and essays, I bring audiences in contact with contemporary literary references and open new creative dimensions to an ancient art form. My work encourages the viewer to consider a personal and collective act of responsibility for the past, present and future.

Films are developed as layered abstract paintings in a moving form where metaphor, warm and cool colors, observations of light and dark, tone, rhythm and shape become predominate factors in the visual imagery along with free-flowing montages and the play of superimpositions. The work of Alan Berliner, Nathaniel Dorsky, Godfrey Reggio and Chris Marker have been instrumental in guiding my creative journey.

No matter whether the project theme be about crumbling bridges and infrastructure, placemaking and the environment, or life after suicide, I believe it is important to provide an opening for the viewer to make personal meaning and truths from what they see. Observing films in multiple viewings bring overlays of interpretation and significance.

My films are distributed at film festivals and events, pop-up exhibitions, street art installations and museums, as well as digitally online.
