Spider Haze

Moth in the Gallery

Emily Červenka is a Vancouver-based photographer that picked up her first film camera while stuck in a loop of the mundane. The intentionality of the film camera taught her to love the changing moods and details of each day. Flash-forward a few years, and Emily has expanded her practice to specializing in digital portraits of people and of businesses that captures the joy and essence of what they do. But she still carries that same film camera around, reveling in a meditation on the everyday.

Artist’s Note:
Spider Haze: I took this photo on a sleepy hike in late Spring. I was finally shaking off a winter depression that left me head underwater for months. Walking barefoot along the slippy dirt trail with my runners swinging my hands, I realized that I was so focused on looking down and avoiding the little rocks that I was neglecting to notice the forest around me. I gazed up and – clear as day – spotted this spiderweb shining in the sun.

Moth in the Gallery: In the National Gallery in London, I found myself densely packed in with prestigious art revered by people all around the world. I walked from room to room with my mouth hanging open. Somehow, and like a moth drawn to the light, this little golden lamp was the only thing that I thought to take a picture of.
